The World As They See It

Cosmological Structure. The universe was created by Amma (supreme deity) through a series of creative acts involving vibration, spinning, and cosmic egg. In the accounts Griaule and Dieterlen recorded, the cosmos also turns on the stars: sigi tolo, which they identified with Sirius, and po tolo, a small, heavy companion. The Nommo (primordial water beings) are the divine intermediaries who brought civilization, agriculture, and sacred knowledge to humanity. Time is organized in 60-year Sigui cycles, each cycle renewing the cosmic covenant between Dogon and the stars.
Creation. Amma took a lump of clay, squeezed it in his hand, and flung it — this became the Earth. His first attempt at union with the Earth was disrupted by the termite hill (the Earth's resistance). From this imperfect beginning came Yurugu (the Pale Fox), an incomplete being born of the failed creation — the force of disorder in the cosmos. Amma's second creation produced the Nommo — perfect water beings born as twins, embodying the ideal of paired complementarity. The Nommo descended to Earth on an ark, bringing with them the knowledge of agriculture, weaving, speech, and social organization.
Time. Cyclical, organized by astronomical observation. The 60-year Sigui cycle is the primary unit of sacred time. The Sigui ceremony renews the world, transfers sacred knowledge between generations, and honors the Nommo's covenant with the Dogon. Within the 60-year cycle are 8-year cycles and smaller divisions, tied in Griaule and Dieterlen's account to the star sigi tolo.
The Sacred. The stars are sacred. Griaule and Dieterlen reported that initiates spoke of po tolo, a small, very heavy star circling sigi tolo in about fifty years, and identified the pair with Sirius and its white-dwarf companion. That report is disputed: Sirius B had been observed in 1862 and its density established in the 1910s and 1920s, before Griaule's fieldwork, and Walter van Beek's restudy (1991) found no knowledge of a companion star among the Dogon his team worked with. Water is sacred as the medium of the Nommo. The number 8 (born of the 8 primordial ancestors) structures sacred knowledge.
Death / Afterlife. The dead become ancestors who continue to participate in the life of the community. The Dama ceremony (held 3-5 years after death) formally releases the deceased's spirit from the Earth and sends them to join the ancestors. Sigi masks perform at Dama ceremonies, representing the link between the living and the ancestral world.

The Figures

Supreme Being / Creator
Amma — the supreme deity who created the universe. Present everywhere, in everything. The source of the cosmic vibration (kize uzi) from which all things emerged.
Major Deities / Spirits
  • Nommo — the primordial water beings, born as twin pairs. Embodiment of perfection, complementarity, and life force. They sacrificed themselves to give knowledge to humanity and were resurrected. Their ark brought civilization to Earth.
  • Po Tolo — not a deity but a sacred star: in Griaule and Dieterlen's account the smallest and heaviest of the stars, of which it is said "it acts on all the other stars." They identified it with Sirius B; the identification is disputed.
  • Yurugu (the Pale Fox) — born incomplete from Amma's first failed creation. The principle of disorder. Runs through the cosmos leaving tracks that diviners read — the Pale Fox's footprints in the divination sand reveal what disorder is occurring and what must be done.
  • Lebe — the first ancestor to die and be resurrected. His bones, swallowed by a Nommo and reconstituted, gave the Dogon their agricultural knowledge.
  • The 8 Nommo Ancestors — the eight primordial ancestors (four male-female pairs) from whom all human social organization derives.
Trickster / Culture Hero
Yurugu (the Pale Fox) — not a trickster in the Anansi sense but the cosmic disrupter. Born incomplete, he generates disorder by his very existence. Paradoxically, his tracks in the divination sand are what allows diviners to read the state of the cosmos. Disorder makes knowledge possible.
Ancestor Figures
The 8 original Nommo ancestors are the foundation of all Dogon social structure. Lebe (the resurrected ancestor) governs agriculture. Dead community members are honored through the Dama ceremony and become part of the ancestral collective.

Sacred Elements

Sacred Objects. The Sigui mask (large wooden snake mask, passed between generations during the 60-year ceremony). Kanaga masks (cross-shaped, used in Dama ceremonies). Hogon's iron staff. Sacred granary architecture encoding cosmological knowledge in its proportions and divisions.
Sacred Places. The Bandiagara Escarpment — cliff dwellings and sacred caves. Specific sacred sites within the cliffs where cosmic events occurred in mythological time. The village granary as cosmological model. Divination fields where the Pale Fox's footprints are read.
Sacred Practices. Sigui ceremony — held every 60 years, renews the world, transfers sacred knowledge, honors the Nommo covenant. Dama ceremony — releases souls of the dead, involves masked performances. Fox divination (géru) — diviners prepare a divination field, leave questions drawn in the sand overnight, and read the Pale Fox's footprints the next morning to understand what disorder is present and what is needed. The Hogon's role — chief spiritual authority, mediator between community and the ancestors.
Sacred Prohibitions. The Hogon must not touch the ground directly — he wears sandals and is always separated from the earth. Sacred cosmological knowledge is initiatory — not everyone is permitted to know everything. The Sigui ceremony and its language (sigi so) are accessible only to initiates. The granary's inner chambers are restricted.

The Narrative Tradition

How Stories Are Told. Through the initiation system — deeper cosmological knowledge is transmitted at successive levels of initiation. The outer (giri so), inner (bolo so), and deep (so dayi) levels of knowledge are transmitted progressively. Public ceremonies (Sigui, Dama) transmit knowledge through performance, masked dance, and collective ritual. Diviners read the Pale Fox's tracks and narrate what they reveal.
Who Tells Them. Hogon priests for sacred cosmological knowledge. Diviners for fox divination readings. Initiated elders for ceremonial knowledge. Women participate in some ceremonies but the deepest astronomical knowledge is held by male initiates.
When They Are Told. During initiation ceremonies. During Sigui (60-year renewal). During Dama (death ceremony). During agricultural festivals tied to the star calendar.
The Purpose of Story. To maintain the Dogon's covenant with the Nommo and with Amma's ordering of the world. To organize human social life according to the cosmic pattern. To transmit astronomical knowledge that enables the community to understand their position in the universe and act accordingly.
Signature Story Types. Amma's creation (cosmic origin), the Nommo's descent and sacrifice (civilization origin), the Pale Fox's disruption (disorder cosmology), Lebe's resurrection (agricultural covenant), Sigui renewal narratives, fox divination readings.

The Shape This Story World Shares

Why Cyclical Architecture. The Dogon cosmological system is organized by astronomical cycles — the star cycles Griaule and Dieterlen recorded, the 60-year Sigui cycle, the 8-year agricultural cycles. Creation itself is cyclical — Amma's creative force vibrates and spins in circles and spirals. The Sigui ceremony renews the world by returning to the beginning of the cycle. Stories in this tradition track the movement through cosmic time toward the renewal point.
Structural Logic. Stories move through the phases of the cosmic cycle — from the initial creation/stirring through disruption (the Pale Fox), through the Nommo's intervention, through the work of restoration and organization, toward the renewal point where the cycle begins again richer. Resolution is renewal — not ending but the return to a beginning that is now informed by everything the cycle traversed.
Structural Movement. The cosmic beginning (Amma's first stirring) → the Pale Fox's disruption (incomplete creation generates disorder) → the Nommo's descent and sacrifice (divine intervention bringing order and knowledge) → the work of cosmic reorganization (establishing the patterns of agriculture, social life, astronomy) → the Sigui renewal (the cycle completes and begins again) → the eternal resonance (creation continues vibrating)

The Movements

  1. Amma's First Stirring (Stellar Genesis)Before matter, before form — the first movement of the supreme creative force. Amma holds the universe in potential: the cosmic egg. In Dogon cosmology creation begins with a spinning movement — Amma rotates, and the rotation generates the first forms. Sound precedes matter; the vibration (kize uzi) is the creative force. This is not creation from nothing but creation from potential — the egg that already holds everything.
  2. Po Tolo Formation (Cosmic Structure)Named for Po Tolo — Sirius B, the smallest, densest, most invisible star, which organizes everything around it. Invisible to the naked eye, yet its gravity determines the movements of all other bodies in the system. This is the cosmological teaching: what is smallest and most unseen can be what organizes everything. In story terms — the hidden force whose weight shapes every relationship, every trajectory.
  3. Nommo Descent (Divine Messengers)The Nommo — primordial water beings born as perfect twin pairs — descend from Sirius bringing civilization: agriculture, weaving, speech, sacred knowledge. Their sacrifice is total and generative — the Nommo divided among humanity so that knowledge could enter the human world. The pairing is the deeper teaching: everything true comes in complementary twos. The granary holds 8 chambers for the 8 Nommo ancestors; the village is laid out as the Nommo's body. Through sacrifice, divine knowledge becomes human inheritance.
  4. Cosmic Disruption (Disorder and Challenge)Yurugu, the Pale Fox — born prematurely from Amma's first incomplete creation, tearing free of the cosmic egg before he was fully formed. He is not evil; he is incomplete, endlessly seeking what he was separated from at birth. His running introduces disorder — and paradoxically, the tracks he leaves are what diviners read in the dawn sand. Disorder makes knowledge visible. Give your disruption Yurugu's pathos: the tragedy of the unfinished, not the malice of a villain.
  5. Cosmic Reorganization (New Order)After Yurugu's disruption, Amma sends the Nommo to reorganize creation — establishing the proper patterns: the agricultural calendar, the social structure, the sacred geometry of granary and village. The new order is richer than the original because it has incorporated the disruption. The Hogon's lifework is to keep the earthly reflection aligned with the cosmic original — and when the pattern is violated, ceremony restores it.
  6. Sigui Cycle (Renewal and Remembrance)Every 60 years the Sigui ceremony renews the world — restores the covenant between Dogon and Nommo, transfers the sacred knowledge to the next generation, and returns the cycle to its beginning. Renewal is not repetition: it is the completion of one cycle and the initialization of the next, each richer for what the last accumulated. The great Sigui snake mask passes between generations; the ceremony speaks its own language, sigi so, heard only once in a lifetime. The transfer of knowledge is physically enacted.
  7. Eternal Resonance (Ongoing Creation)Creation does not stop — Amma's vibration continues through all things, and every being adds its voice to the cosmic conversation. The Dogon understanding is that the cosmos is not a finished product but an ongoing process, and human participation — ceremony, knowledge, right relationship — is cosmologically necessary for its continuation. Without the Sigui, the world does not renew properly. Your story, too, is a contribution to the ongoing creation.

An example: Second Generation

Science fiction, the generation ship Long Patience, year 61 of 140. One idea, worked through nine Story Worlds; this is its plot in Dogon — Creation Cycle. The idea is the writer’s; the Story World gives it its shape. It is a plot, the blueprint this Story World returns, not a finished story.

The cast

  • Ada Voss, 19, first-generation-born navigator in training, the best orbital mathematician aboard.
  • Commander Ilse Brandt, 70, one of the last living Founders. Keeps the course and the Charter.
  • Kofi Mensah-Lind, 20, Ada's friend, hydroponics, leads the Assembly of the shipborn.
  • The Charter: the Founders' law — hold course for Tau Ceti; no deviation. The finding: Ada's survey shows a nearer, habitable world (designated Shore) reachable in 22 years, not 79 — but turning means abandoning the Charter and Earth's last instruction.
  • The Garden, the ship's ecosystem, failing slowly. The Archive, the Founders' records. The renewal: the ship's 60th-year Ceremony of Course is due.

YOUR DOGON CREATION CYCLE STORY STRUCTURE

⭐ PHASE 1: AMMA'S FIRST STIRRING (STELLAR GENESIS)

Creation Impulse: COSMIC SEED

The Void/Primordial State Before the voyage: a dying Earth, and a few thousand people choosing to put everything they knew into one ship.

First Creative Act The Founders write the Charter — hold course for Tau Ceti; do not deviate — and launch the Long Patience. The ship and its law are made in one act.

Cosmic Laws/Principles Established

  • cycles
  • balance
  • connection
🌟 PHASE 2: PO TOLO FORMATION (COSMIC STRUCTURE)

Cosmic Structures: time streams

Dense Core/Central Power The Charter: small, written on the ship's single sheet of real paper, invisible in daily life, and yet everything aboard is organised around it — the rationing, the ranks, the course.

Orbital Relationships The Founders orbit the Charter closest; the shipborn orbit the Founders; the Garden, the Archive and the Assembly circle around them all.

Hidden/Invisible Forces The ship's slow failure — soil fatigue in the Garden, failing seals, the arithmetic of 79 more years — invisible to most and known to a few.

💧 PHASE 3: NOMMO DESCENT (DIVINE MESSENGERS)

Divine Messenger Type: cosmic twins

Gifts/Knowledge Brought

  • agriculture
  • astronomy
  • crafts
  • rituals

Method of Teaching The Founders taught the first shipborn generation in pairs — one to learn the Garden, one to learn the stars — so knowledge would never live in one person. Ada (stars) and Kofi (Garden) are such a pair.

Sacrifice/Price of Knowledge The price of the knowledge was the Founders' own lives: every one of them gave up Earth and will die aboard; the shipborn are asked to give up any world but the one in the Charter.

Initial Reception For sixty years the shipborn accepted the gifts and the law together, gratefully and without question.

⚡ PHASE 4: COSMIC DISRUPTION (DISORDER AND CHALLENGE)

Disruption Source: forbidden knowledge

Nature of the Disruption Ada's survey finds Shore — a nearer habitable world — and the knowledge breaks loose before the ship is ready for it: a junior technician leaks the data to the shipborn Assembly before Ada has finished checking it. Half-formed, incomplete, it tears through the ship like something born too early.

Effect on Divine Teachings The Charter's authority cracks: if the Founders could not see Shore, what else did they get wrong? Some shipborn stop reporting to Garden shifts; some Founders call for Ada's data to be sealed.

Cosmic Consequences

  • knowledge fragmentation
  • divine separation

Immediate Response Commander Brandt seals the survey; the Assembly demands it be opened; Ada, caught between them, insists on finishing the check before anyone decides anything.

🔄 PHASE 5: COSMIC REORGANIZATION (NEW ORDER)

Reorganization Strategy: systemic transformation

New Cosmic Arrangements A joint council of Founders and shipborn — the first in the ship's history — is formed to review the finding, with Ada and Kofi as its working pair.

Enhanced Teachings/Protections The Charter is not discarded; a new article is drafted beside it: the course may be changed by a vote of the whole ship at a Ceremony of Course, on the evidence of its navigators.

Role of Disruptive Force The leak, though reckless, forced the question into the open: without it, the Founders would have buried Shore, and the ship would have learned too late.

Cosmic Wisdom Gained Every law made for a journey must leave room for what its makers could not see.

🎭 PHASE 6: SIGUI CYCLE (RENEWAL AND REMEMBRANCE)

Renewal Cycle Type: generational

Sacred Preservation Methods

  • oral tradition
  • sacred symbols
  • ceremonial objects

Cycle Duration & Markers The Ceremony of Course is held every 60 years — once in each generation's lifetime. The story's climax is the second one, in year 61, the first ever presided over by shipborn.

Renewal Ceremonies At the Ceremony, the Charter is read aloud in the Assembly hall, the navigators present the ship's position, and the course is confirmed. This time Ada presents two courses, and the whole ship votes.

Knowledge Evolution The ship turns toward Shore. The Charter keeps its first article and gains a second; the next Ceremony, sixty years on, will be held on a new world or not at all.

∞ PHASE 7: ETERNAL RESONANCE (ONGOING CREATION)

Achieved Cosmic State: dynamic harmony

Living Cosmic Principles Hold the course you are given; read the sky yourself; tell the whole ship what you see.

Ongoing Creative Process The ship keeps making itself: new crop strains, new navigators, a new article in the Charter written in a shipborn hand.

Relationship with Original Creator The Founders are honoured, not overthrown: Ilse Brandt signs the new article first.

Wisdom Available to All The first generation lays down the law; the second must be trusted to read it against the sky.

Future Potential Shore, in 22 years — and a Ceremony of Course on solid ground.
