The World As They See It

Cosmological Structure. The forest itself is the living, conscious, benevolent whole — often addressed as father, mother, friend, and provider. The forest is not a backdrop but a living entity in relationship with the people; all life is held within it, and right relationship with the forest is the foundation of existence. Harmony between the people and the forest is the natural state; when it is disturbed, it must be restored through negotiation and song.
Creation. The forest is the source and sustainer of life — the given, provident world. Rather than a single dramatic creation myth, the emphasis is on the ongoing provision and benevolence of the forest as the living ground of all being.
Time. Relational and restorative — time turns through the maintenance and restoration of right relationship with the forest. When things go wrong (sickness, death, poor hunting, discord), it is understood that the forest may be "sleeping" or that the relationship has been disturbed, and the work is to wake the forest and restore harmony through the molimo.
The Sacred. The forest itself — living, conscious, provident. Song, especially the molimo (the great song-ceremony by which the people wake the forest and restore relationship). Harmony and right relationship. The community gathered in song. The reciprocity between people and forest.
Death / Afterlife. Death, sickness, and misfortune are understood as signs that the forest may be sleeping or that harmony has been disturbed; the response is the molimo — the ceremony of song by which the people rouse the forest, restore the relationship, and bring things back into balance. The emphasis is on the restoration of harmony among the living and between the people and the forest, rather than on a doctrine of the afterlife.

The Figures

Supreme Being / The Living World
The forest itself — addressed as the great provident being, father and mother, the living conscious whole in relationship with the people. There is no need for a distant creator; the forest is the present, living source.
Major Figures
  • The community — the people themselves, whose harmony and song maintain the relationship with the forest; the community, not a single hero, is the protagonist.
  • The elders and the keepers of the molimo — those who lead the great song-ceremony.
  • The forest — the living participant in every story, the "other party" in the negotiation of right relationship.
Trickster / Culture Figure
The forest tradition is not trickster-centred; its heroes are the community in harmony and the singers who wake the forest.
Ancestor Figures
The forebears who lived in right relationship with the forest and passed down the songs and the ways of the molimo.

Sacred Elements

Sacred Objects. The molimo (both the ceremony and, in some traditions, the trumpet/instrument that carries its voice). The songs themselves. The fire around which the people gather in the night to sing.
Sacred Places. The forest — every part of it living and sacred. The camp and its fire, where the community gathers. The deep forest, the source of provision.
Sacred Practices. Song — the polyphonic vocal music of the forest peoples. The molimo — the great ceremony of song, sometimes lasting many nights, by which the people wake the sleeping forest and restore right relationship when harmony has been disturbed (by death, sickness, or discord). The sharing of the hunt. The maintenance of harmony within the community and with the forest.
Sacred Prohibitions. The forest must be honoured and the relationship kept; the forest is not to be treated as mere resource but as a living, conscious being with whom one is in reciprocal relationship. Disharmony within the community disturbs the relationship with the forest and must be addressed. The molimo and its songs are sacred.

The Narrative Tradition

How Stories Are Told. Above all through song — the polyphonic music of the forest peoples, and the molimo ceremony. The deep "story" is the ongoing relationship with the living forest: harmony, its disturbance, and its restoration through the community gathering in song to wake the forest and negotiate right relationship anew. The pattern is relational and restorative: the mending of relationship between the people and the living world.
Who Tells Them. The community as a whole, singing together; the elders and keepers of the molimo who lead the great ceremony.
When They Are Told. In the nightly song of the camp, and above all in the molimo ceremony, undertaken when harmony has been disturbed and the forest must be woken and the relationship restored.
The Purpose of Story. To maintain and restore right relationship with the living forest — to wake the forest when it sleeps, to mend harmony when it is disturbed, to negotiate anew the reciprocal relationship between the people and the living world. Story and song heal the relationship; they do not defeat an enemy. The deep work is the restoration of harmony through negotiation with the living world.
Signature Story Types. The molimo ceremony narratives, the songs of the forest, and the accounts of harmony disturbed and restored through the waking of the forest.

Their Stories

  • The Molimo — Waking the ForestMbuti (Ituri forest) tradition — the great song-ceremony by which the people wake the sleeping forest and restore harmony when it has been disturbed by death or misfortune
  • The Song of the ForestForest peoples' polyphonic song tradition — the communal music through which the people commune with the living forest
  • Harmony Disturbed and RestoredForest peoples' tradition — the pattern by which disturbance (death, sickness, discord) is met with communal gathering, the molimo, and the restoration of right relationship

The Shape This Story World Shares

Why Negotiation Architecture. The forest peoples' tradition is built on negotiation — the reciprocal relationship between the people and the living forest, maintained and, when disturbed, restored through a process of reaching-out, communion, and the finding of renewed mutual terms. The molimo is precisely a negotiation with the living world: when harmony is broken (by death, sickness, discord), the people do not conquer or defeat anything; they gather, reach out to the forest through song, the living world responds, and a renewed harmony — new mutual terms — is reached. The whole movement is the restoration of right relationship through negotiation between two living parties, the people and the forest.
Structural Logic. The maintenance, disturbance, and restoration of a reciprocal relationship with a living other (the forest). The movement is not conflict-to-victory but reaching-out, communion, response, and the negotiation of renewed mutual terms — harmony restored between two living parties.
Structural Movement. Forest Awareness (the living world established) → the Imbalance (harmony disturbed) → Community Gathering (the people come together to recognize the disturbance) → Calling the Living World / the Molimo (reaching out through song) → the Living World Responds (the forest answers) → the Negotiation (finding mutual terms) → the Agreement (new terms sealed) → Renewed Harmony (the forest wakes, the relationship restored).

The Movements

  1. Forest Awareness — The Living WorldEstablishing the forest as a conscious presence, not a backdrop
  2. The Imbalance — Something Between Is WrongThe relationship between the community and the living world is disrupted
  3. Community Gathering — Recognizing TogetherThe community collectively acknowledges the broken relationship
  4. Calling the Living World — The MolimoReaching out to the living world through beauty, song, and attention. When something big goes wrong — illness, bad hunting, death — the BaAka and Mbuti understanding is not that the forest is angry, but that it is asleep. The Molimo is the technology of waking it: night after night of the community's most beautiful singing, addressed directly to the forest, until the relationship is restored. The response to crisis is not weapons or accusations — it is beauty, offered upward.
  5. The Living World RespondsThe world acknowledges the community's offering and reveals its perspective. In the forest peoples' understanding, the forest answers those who address it — through the return of game, the sweetening of honey, the clearing of paths, the lifting of illness, the feeling in the camp that the singing has been heard. The response is read in relationship, not in spectacle. What matters in your story is that the living world is a party to the negotiation, with its own perspective, its own needs, and its own voice — however it chooses to speak.
  6. The Negotiation — Finding Mutual TermsThe heart of negotiation architecture — both parties finding terms they can honor
  7. The Agreement — New Terms SealedBoth parties commit to new terms of reciprocity
  8. Renewed Harmony — The Forest WakesBoth parties living in the new arrangement — the world is fully alive again

An example: Second Generation

Science fiction, the generation ship Long Patience, year 61 of 140. One idea, worked through nine Story Worlds; this is its plot in BaAka — Congo Forest Spirits. The idea is the writer’s; the Story World gives it its shape. It is a plot, the blueprint this Story World returns, not a finished story.

The cast

  • Ada Voss, 19, first-generation-born navigator in training, the best orbital mathematician aboard.
  • Commander Ilse Brandt, 70, one of the last living Founders. Keeps the course and the Charter.
  • Kofi Mensah-Lind, 20, Ada's friend, hydroponics, leads the Assembly of the shipborn.
  • The Charter: the Founders' law — hold course for Tau Ceti; no deviation. The finding: Ada's survey shows a nearer, habitable world (designated Shore) reachable in 22 years, not 79 — but turning means abandoning the Charter and Earth's last instruction.
  • The Garden, the ship's ecosystem, failing slowly. The Archive, the Founders' records. The renewal: the ship's 60th-year Ceremony of Course is due.

STORY FOUNDATION ──────────────── Title: Second Generation

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ 🌳 1. FOREST AWARENESS — THE LIVING WORLD ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ The Living World: The living world of this story is the Garden — the ship's biosphere, three decks of soil, water and growing things that make the air and food for four thousand people. The shipborn treat it as alive: it breathes, it answers care, it sulks when neglected. The Community Within: The people of the Long Patience: the aging Founders, the shipborn generation who tend the Garden, the children in the crèche, and Ada Voss, the navigator who has found a nearer world. World's Personality: Generous Provider — gives freely when the relationship is honored Signs of the Living World:

  • Sounds — the world communicates through what is heard
  • Growth patterns — what flourishes or withers is a message
  • Silence — the world withdraws its voice when displeased

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ ⚖️ 2. THE IMBALANCE — SOMETHING BETWEEN IS WRONG ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ What Has Gone Wrong: The Garden is failing slowly: soil fatigue in the lower beds, blight in the wheat, a falling oxygen margin. Nobody has listened to it for years — the ship has been run by the Charter and the course, as if the Garden were machinery. Source of Imbalance: Forgetting the Practices — the songs, rituals, or gratitude stopped How the World Shows Displeasure: The Garden goes quiet: the bees stop working the lower beds, the drip lines clog, the harvest shrinks for three seasons in a row. The silence in the Garden is its displeasure. What the Community Feels:

  • Sense of loss — something vital is missing
  • Confusion — not understanding what went wrong
  • Fear — of what the withdrawal means
  • Determination — resolve to restore the bond

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ 🔥 3. COMMUNITY GATHERING — RECOGNIZING TOGETHER ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ How They Gather: When Ada's finding of a habitable world — Shore, 22 years away — splits the ship, Kofi calls the whole ship into the Garden itself, not the Assembly hall, for a night gathering among the beds. Voices Heard: Founders who remember Earth; shipborn who have only known the ship; the Garden keepers, who say what the soil is telling them; the children, who ask if Shore has bees. Gathering Form: Song Rising — awareness spreads through music before words

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ 🎵 4. CALLING THE LIVING WORLD — THE MOLIMO ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ How They Reach Out: The ship reaches out to the Garden the way the Founders once did: everyone takes Garden shifts again — Founders, shipborn, navigators, children — and the work is done with attention, by hand, together. The Offering: Pure Attention — stopping all other activity to focus completely on the world Method of Calling: For one full growing cycle, the whole ship works the beds in rotation and the old planting songs are sung again — songs the shipborn learned as nursery rhymes and never knew were for the soil. Calling Qualities:

  • Collective — the whole community participates
  • Beautiful — the offering has aesthetic power
  • Humble — approaching as equals, not supplicants
  • Persistent — continuing even when no response comes

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ 🌿 5. THE LIVING WORLD RESPONDS ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ How the World Responds: The Garden answers in its own language: the lower beds recover when rotated, the bees return, the harvest stabilises — but the soil scans show the deep beds are exhausted beyond repair. The World's Perspective: From the Garden's side, the ship has asked too much for too long: it can sustain four thousand people for a generation more, not three. Response Form: A Mirror — the world reflects the community's true state back to them

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ 🤝 6. THE NEGOTIATION — FINDING MUTUAL TERMS ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ What the Community Offers: Rotation and rest for the deep beds, rationing for everyone, and a vote at the Ceremony of Course to turn for Shore. What the World Requires: A journey it can survive, and a keeper's voice in every decision about the course. What the World Offers: Twenty-two more years of air and food — and seed stock, cultivated now for a planet, to plant on Shore. Negotiation Dynamic: Pure Reciprocity — equal exchange, gift for gift Negotiation Qualities:

  • Mutual respect — both parties as equals
  • Genuine sacrifice — real cost to both sides
  • Growth — both parties learn something new
  • Patience — the negotiation takes time

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ ✨ 7. THE AGREEMENT — NEW TERMS SEALED ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ The New Agreement: The ship turns for Shore; the Garden is rested and rotated; and the new article of the Charter requires the Garden keepers' assessment before any course is set. How It Is Sealed: At the Ceremony of Course the vote is taken in the Garden, and the first seed for Shore is planted in a new bed by a Founder and a shipborn child together. What Is Different Now: The Garden is part of the ship's government now, not its engine room. Agreement Type: Seasonal Cycle — reciprocity tied to natural rhythms and cycles

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ 🌍 8. RENEWED HARMONY — THE FOREST WAKES ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ The Renewed World: Twenty-two years later the Long Patience reaches Shore with a Garden that has rested and seed ready for open ground. Architecture Check:

  • Living World as full character — not scenery or metaphor
  • True negotiation — neither party dominates
  • Mutual change — both parties transformed
  • Ongoing commitment — not a one-time fix
  • Egalitarian voices — no single protagonist dominates
  • Beauty as currency — the offering has aesthetic power

Final Notes: There is no villain; the Charter was right for its time, and the Garden is not an enemy. The negotiation is between a people and the living system that keeps them.

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ NEGOTIATION ARCHITECTURE PRINCIPLES ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

THE 8-STEP NEGOTIATION PATTERN:

  • Forest Awareness — establishing the living world as conscious partner
  • The Imbalance — recognizing the broken reciprocal relationship
  • Community Gathering — collective acknowledgment
  • Calling the World (Molimo) — offering beauty to earn attention
  • The World Responds — receiving the world's perspective
  • The Negotiation — finding mutual terms
  • The Agreement — sealing new reciprocal commitment
  • Renewed Harmony — living within the new arrangement

KEY PRINCIPLES:

  • The living world is a CHARACTER, not a setting
  • Resolution comes through NEGOTIATION, not conquest or restoration
  • Both parties change — neither returns to the previous state
  • Beauty is currency — what you offer must cost you and be beautiful
  • The agreement requires ONGOING maintenance, not one-time resolution
  • No single protagonist — the community and world are co-equal
  • Polyphonic harmony — multiple voices creating something no single voice could

HOW THIS DIFFERS FROM OTHER ARCHITECTURES:

  • Linear (European-American): Conflict → Victory → Resolution
  • Cyclical (Ubuntu): Disruption → Restoration → Return
  • Negotiation (BaAka): Imbalance → Dialogue → Mutual New Terms
