The World Story Plot Architectures

The shapes that show when the world’s Story Worlds are laid side by side

The World Story Plot Architectures

Every GriotsWell World Story World is built from one people’s own data: their stories, their mythology, their tribe and their history. When the data of all those Story Worlds is laid side by side, shapes show — shapes that peoples who never met arrived at on their own. Those shapes are the World Story Plot Architectures. They are plot architectures: each is a way a plot moves, how time works in it, how meaning builds, and what resolution means.

They were found in the Story Worlds; they were not decided first. Each Story World stays its own people’s way of telling. The architecture is what that telling shares with the tellings of other peoples. Nine have been found. They are not ranked, and none is the default. Linear is one of them — the one we know.

📏

1. Linear

The one we know — forward movement through time, driven by conflict toward resolution

Events move forward on a timeline. A protagonist encounters conflict, which escalates through rising action to a climax, then resolves. Beginning → middle → end. This is the one we know: the shape most writers learn first, and the shape of the GriotsWell Classic Story Worlds — the Hero’s Journey, Three-Act, Seven-Point and Four-Act — as well as of World Story Worlds such as the Norse sagas and the Lakota vision quest.

How time works: Sequential. Past → present → future. Flashbacks are departures from the forward flow, not the structural default.

How meaning builds: Through escalation. Each event raises the stakes higher than the last. Meaning peaks at the climax.

How it resolves: The conflict is won, lost, or transformed. The story ends in a different state than it began.

2. Cyclical

Stories that return to their beginning, renewed

The story ends where it began — but everything has changed. Time is circular. Seasons return. Generations repeat patterns. The "ending" is a new beginning. This shape shows in the data of peoples who understand time as a turning, where return is completion.

How time works: Circular. The ending returns to the opening, transformed by what happened between. Past, present, and future coexist.

How meaning builds: Through recognition. The reader gradually recognises patterns repeating at deeper levels. Meaning comes from the return, not the departure.

How it resolves: Restoration and renewal. The cycle continues. Completion.

3. Spiral

Circling back to the same themes at ever-deeper levels

The story revisits the same places, themes, or questions — but each return goes deeper. Not repetition. Deepening. Like walking a spiral path: you pass the same compass points, but you’re closer to the center each time. Past and present coexist in the telling.

How time works: Spiral. Time deepens. Each pass through familiar territory reveals new layers beneath.

How meaning builds: Through deepening. The third visit to a theme carries the weight of the first two. Meaning accumulates in layers.

How it resolves: Arrival at the center. The deepest layer of truth is reached. The spiral completes inward.

4. Balance-Seeking

Cosmic order disrupted and restored — harmony as the goal

The story begins in a state of cosmic balance. Chaos disrupts that balance. The narrative follows the process of restoration — restoring the proper order of things. The goal is truth.

How time works: State-based. The story moves between states of order and disorder.

How meaning builds: Through the contrast between balance and imbalance. Each trial clarifies what true balance requires.

How it resolves: Balance is restored. Ma’at, hózhó, rasa — truth, harmony, cosmic order — prevails. Truth over chaos.

5. Web / Network

Every element connects to every other element

There is no single path through the story. Every character, event, and consequence connects to every other through visible and invisible threads. Pull one thread and the whole web vibrates. Meaning comes from pattern completion — seeing the full web.

How time works: Radiating. Cause and effect radiate outward from every action simultaneously.

How meaning builds: Through connection. Each new element adds threads to every existing element. The web becomes denser and more meaningful as it grows.

How it resolves: Pattern completion. The web is whole. All threads are visible. The reader sees the full design.

6. Non-Conflict

Development through surprise and recontextualization

Stories that develop without conflict as a driving force. No antagonist required. No rising tension toward a climax. Instead, the narrative introduces elements, develops them, then introduces something unexpected that recontextualises everything that came before. Resolution comes through new understanding — harmony restored through juxtaposition.

How time works: Four movements or through intervals of meaningful silence. Introduction → development → unexpected turn → reconciliation.

How meaning builds: Through juxtaposition. Meaning emerges when the unexpected element is placed beside the established elements. The surprise creates meaning retroactively — the first two movements are reread in light of the third.

How it resolves: Harmony through recontextualisation. The elements are reconciled into a new whole. Or silence itself becomes the resolution — what is not said carries the full weight of the ending.

7. Geographic

The land is the story — place as narrative structure

The physical landscape IS the story structure. Sacred sites are story beats. Rivers are narrative transitions. Mountains are turning points. Moving through geography is moving through meaning. The story exists in the land itself — it was there before anyone told it and will remain after.

How time works: Spatial. The story moves through place. Time exists in the land.

How meaning builds: Through journey. Each place carries its own meaning. The connection between places creates the narrative.

How it resolves: Arrival or return. Reaching the final place, or completing the route back to origin.

8. Multi-Trial

Worthiness proven through accumulated trials

Meaning builds through a series of trials that each prove and deepen the protagonist’s worthiness. Many tests, each adding to the hero’s stature and the community’s recognition of that stature. The structure proves worth through accumulation.

How time works: Sequential but episodic. Each trial is complete in itself and also part of the larger proof of worth.

How meaning builds: Through accumulation. Each trial adds weight to the hero’s stature. By the final trial, the community — and the reader — has witnessed enough to recognise the hero’s legitimacy.

How it resolves: Recognition and restoration. The hero’s worth is established. Community is renewed. The people have their champion.

9. Negotiation / Reciprocal

Story as reciprocal exchange between worlds

The narrative is a negotiation. Two worlds — human and spirit, village and forest, storyteller and audience, mortal and immortal — must exchange. Both sides give and receive. The story is the negotiation itself. The exchange creates meaning.

How time works: Exchange-based. Time moves through the rhythm of offer and response.

How meaning builds: Through the terms of exchange. Each offer and response redefines what both sides need and what they’re willing to give. The negotiation deepens.

How it resolves: Agreement — or the recognition that agreement cannot be reached. Both sides are changed by the exchange itself.

These are the World Story Plot Architectures found in the data of the GriotsWell World Story Worlds, and the map is still being drawn. The architecture tells you the shape. The Story World tells you the origin: the people whose stories, mythology, tribe and history it was built from.
