An example: The Paralegal
Legal thriller, Toronto, present day. One idea, worked through nine Story Worlds; this is its plot in Babylonian — Enuma Elish. The idea is the writer’s; the Story World gives it its shape. It is a plot, the blueprint this Story World returns, not a finished story.
The cast
- Dana Okafor-Reyes, 34, paralegal at Halbrook Vance for nine years. Night-school law degree, never sat the bar. Knows where every file is and who signed what.
- Graham Halbrook, senior partner, 61. Charming, careful, beloved by clients. Buried a 2019 engineering report in the Cardinal Towers case that showed the developer knew the balconies were failing.
- The Ferreira family: tenants injured when a Cardinal Towers balcony collapsed; their suit was settled cheap on Halbrook's advice to them while the firm also quietly represented the developer's insurer.
- Priya Shah, second-year associate, ambitious, Dana's sometime ally. Marcus Bell, records clerk, 58, retiring in four months. Celeste Vance, the other name partner, Halbrook's rival. Ines Ferreira, the daughter who now uses a wheelchair. Tom Adeyemi, a journalist at the Star who covered the collapse.
- The prize: the original report, and a way to put it in front of the Law Society and the Ferreiras without being fired first and discredited.

_Architecture: Cyclical · Tradition: Enuma Elish · Built with GriotsWell Story Worlds_
Step 1 — Enuma Elish — When On High
_The primordial state — the mingling of the waters before sky and earth were named._
Before the Names Before the story begins, Halbrook Vance is a single undivided thing: the partners, the clients, the insurer, the staff and the truth all mingled in one comfortable firm where nobody asks who is serving whom. Nothing has a name yet — not the conflict of interest, not the buried report, not Dana's ambition.
The Two Waters Two powers lie mixed together: the old order of the founding partners, who believe the firm is the law; and the restless younger people — associates, clerks, Dana — who do the work and are starting to read what they file.
Step 2 — Apsu’s Slaying — The First Disruption
_The young gods’ clamor disturbs the primordial parents — and wisdom strikes first._
The Clamor of the New The disturbance is small and ordinary: Dana, pulling boxes for a conflict check, finds the 2019 engineering report in the wrong box and requests the Cardinal Towers retention log under her own login. A quiet person has started asking questions.
The Old Order’s Resolve Graham Halbrook moves to silence the noise the way the old order always does — gently. He promotes Dana into his own practice group where he can watch her, has IT audit her account, and schedules the Cardinal Towers boxes for destruction.
The First Irreversible Act Marcus Bell, on his last day, hands Dana the retention log he was ordered to shred. Once the log exists outside the firm, the old order can never return to what it was: the conflict of interest now has a name.
Step 3 — Tiamat Rises — Chaos Mobilizes
_The chaos-mother, grieving and enraged, assembles her army of monsters._
The Grievance The firm's grievance is fear: the partners believe the firm itself, and every job in it, will die if the truth comes out. Celeste Vance, whose signature is on the insurer retainer, rouses the partnership to protect the firm at any cost.
The Army of Monsters The firm's monsters are its instruments: the outside counsel's demand letter; the 'theft of privileged documents' allegation; the IT audit; the non-disclosure clause in Dana's contract; the reference no one will give her; Priya, reporting every conversation; the retention schedule; the press office; the client's own lawyers; the Law Society's backlog; and Dana's own fear.
The Stolen Legitimacy The firm seizes legitimacy itself: it files a motion with the Law Society to discipline Dana, casting itself as the injured party and her as the wrongdoer. Whoever the regulator believes holds the authority to name what happened.
Step 4 — The Gods’ Fear — None Can Stand
_Each champion fails before Tiamat — the established powers discover their limit._
The Failed Champions First Celeste is approached and sends Dana away to protect herself. Then Tom Adeyemi's editors refuse to run the story without the original. Then a legal-aid lawyer Dana consults tells her she has no standing and should settle with the firm.
What Failure Teaches Each failure teaches the same thing: nobody can win this on Dana's behalf. The power required is the authority of the one who actually knows the record — testimony in her own name.
Step 5 — Marduk’s Bargain — The Champion Chosen
_The young god agrees to fight — for a price: supremacy, spoken and sealed._
The Price Named Dana's price for standing up is simple and frightening: she will do it only as herself — sitting the bar, filing the sworn complaint under her own name, no longer anyone's assistant.
The Test of the Word Her test of the word: she passes the bar exam in the middle of the fight. The credential that was always within her reach becomes real, and so does her right to speak in that room.
The Bargain Sealed Ines Ferreira and her mother formally retain Dana's evidence as part of their reopened claim; Tom's paper agrees to publish on the morning of the hearing; Marcus agrees to testify. The community that was failed hands her its authority.
Step 6 — The Combat — Order Against Chaos
_Marduk defeats Tiamat and builds the ordered world from her divided body._
The Combat At the Law Society hearing Dana meets the firm's case head-on: the storage receipt, the retention log, the insurer retainer and finally the 'Hold — G.H.' note. The net is the record; the decisive stroke is Halbrook unable to explain his own handwriting.
The World from the Body From what is defeated, the new order is built: the firm is split — the insurer practice dissolved, the partnership renamed — and the documents that sank it become the founding file of Dana's own legal clinic and the Ferreiras' reopened case.
Humankind’s Portion The ongoing labour is vigilance: every file at Dana's clinic opens with a page of what is known, what is owed and what is missing, and someone has to fill it in, every time.
Step 7 — The Fifty Names — The Cycle Renewed
_The gods proclaim Marduk’s fifty names — and the New Year turns the wheel again._
The Fifty Names What has been won: Dana's name on a door; the Ferreiras' reopened case; Marcus's honour; a Law Society rule on concurrent representation; Tom's award; and a word that spreads through Bay Street — that the person who keeps the files can also read them aloud.
The Turning Seam The ending turns back toward the beginning: Dana's clinic is now an institution of its own, with its own clients and its own temptations. The story closes on a new volunteer pulling a box from the wrong shelf.
_Built from the seven tablets of the Enuma Elish (King translation, 1902, public domain) — the cycle honored as Babylon kept it._
