The Form
Type. Web / Network
Logic. The story’s true protagonist is the network: meaning lives in the connections — a gift traveling, an obligation ripening, an ancestral presence felt at many points at once. The full pattern is visible only from the whole weave.
Signature movement. Map the weave → a gift moves → ancestral thread → a thread breaks and damage propagates → the great gathering makes all visible → the weave rewoven, the gift moves on.
The Movements
6 movements, in the order the tradition holds them.
-
1
The Web at Rest — Nodes and Threads
Map the network before anything moves: the kin, the partners, the ancestors, the obligations already binding them.
-
2
The Gift Enters — A Movement on the Web
Something of value begins to travel — and its movement pulls every connected thread.
-
3
The Ancestor’s Thread — Presence Across the Weave
The ancestors act in the story — felt at multiple points of the network at once.
-
4
The Broken Thread — Obligation Unhonored
A thread of the weave snaps: a gift not returned, a kinship insulted, an ancestor forgotten.
-
5
The Great Gathering — The Web Made Visible
Feast, ceremony, dance ground: the whole network assembles, and every thread can be seen at once.
-
6
The Weave Rewoven — The Pattern Revealed
Reciprocity restored, the gift moving on — and the pattern only the whole web could show.
How the Tradition Tells It
Form. Oral narrative, ceremonial oratory, dance and sing-sing performance — story carried through exchange itself, each valuable bearing its narrative of previous hands.
Wisdom quote. “Once in the Kula, always in the Kula.” — Trobriand saying recorded in Bronisław Malinowski, Argonauts of the Western Pacific (1922, public domain)
Tradition-level sentiment. Across many Melanesian traditions, the gift is never merely an object: it is history, standing, and relationship in motion. (Stated at the tradition level for this living, plural region.)
Melanesia’s hundreds of distinct peoples each hold their own traditions, and much ceremonial knowledge is restricted to initiated custodians. This resource engages shared narrative architecture at the public, structural level, via the public-domain ethnographic record (Malinowski 1922). It reproduces no restricted knowledge; writers seeking any specific people’s tradition should turn to that community’s own authorized voices.
