European/American (a cultural-origin region within the platform, honored like all others)
The European/American comparative-mythology and craft tradition — the "monomyth" articulated in the 20th century from the study of world mythologies, and widely adopted in Western storytelling craft.
Structural / Mythic View. A view in which the archetypal heroic story follows a pattern of departure, initiation, and return: the hero leaves the ordinary world, crosses into a realm of trial and transformation, undergoes an ordeal and gains a boon, and returns transformed to benefit their community. The pattern is linear — a single through-line of the hero's transformative journey — and moves through a recognizable sequence of stages. Importantly, on this platform the monomyth is treated as ONE of the architectures identified so far, not the universal structure of all story: the comparative mythologists who articulated it drew on many traditions, but the platform holds that it is one linear-heroic pattern among the distinct architectures identified so far.
Time. Linear and transformative — the hero's single through-line from ordinary world through the special world and ordeal to the transformed return. The journey moves forward through its stages, each following from the last, toward the ordeal at its heart and the return that completes it.
The Valued. The transformative journey. Departure, initiation, return. The mentor and supernatural aid. The threshold crossing. The ordeal (death and rebirth). The boon/elixir. The transformed return that benefits the community. ---
Valued Structural Elements. The three great movements (departure, initiation, return). The call to adventure. The mentor and supernatural aid. The threshold crossing. The road of trials. The ordeal (death and rebirth). The reward/boon. The road back. The return with the elixir.
Craft Discipline. Follow the transformative through-line; let the hero be changed by the ordeal; return the boon to the community. Maintain the linear progression of stages while keeping the transformation genuine. ---
`linear`
The hero's journey is a linear architecture — a single transformative through-line moving forward through a recognizable sequence of stages, from the ordinary world through the threshold and the road of trials to the ordeal at its heart and the transformed return. Each stage follows from the last along the hero's journey; the movement is inexorably forward toward the ordeal and the return. On this platform it is honored as one of the equal architectures identified so far — the linear-heroic-transformative form — not as the universal monomyth of all storytelling, but as one distinct structural system among many.
The Ordinary World → the Call to Adventure → Supernatural Aid (the Mentor) → Crossing the First Threshold → Tests, Allies, and Enemies → Approach to the Inmost Cave → the Ordeal (death and rebirth) → the Reward (seizing the sword) → the Road Back → Return with the Elixir. ---
