What Is a Plotting Tool?

A guided, AI-assisted story structure workshop. You answer the prompts. It builds your blueprint.

A Plotting Tool is an interactive workshop that walks you through building the complete structural framework of your story โ€” step by step, field by field. You don't need to know how the structure works before you start. The tool teaches it as you build with it.

The output is a structural blueprint. Not prose. Not a draft. The architecture of your story โ€” everything you need to start writing with confidence.

How It Works

1

You choose your structure

Pick from 17 story structures across 9 architecture types. Not sure which one? The Idea Wizard routes you to the right one in 10 minutes. Each tool shows you what architecture it belongs to and what kind of story it's designed for.

2

You work through guided steps

Each tool breaks its structure into steps โ€” typically 6 to 12. Each step covers one structural element: your inciting incident, your protagonist's core flaw, the midpoint turn, the dark night, the resolution. Each field has a prompt explaining what it needs and why it matters in this structure.

3

AI assists at every field โ€” if you want it

Each field has a โœฆ Assist button. Click it and the AI reads everything you've entered so far and gives you a specific, contextual suggestion for that field โ€” not generic advice, but a suggestion built for your story, your structure, your inputs so far. You can use it, ignore it, or use it as a springboard.

4

Your progress saves to your account

Plotting Tools are cloud-based. Come back tomorrow and everything you entered is still there. Work across multiple sessions. Build multiple structures for the same project if you're comparing approaches.

5

You generate and export your blueprint

When you're done, you generate your complete structural blueprint โ€” a structured document containing all your inputs, organized by the structure's framework. Export it and take it into Scrivener, Word, or Google Docs.

What the AI Actually Does

The AI is a structural collaborator, not a writer

When you click Assist, the AI is doing one specific thing: reading your story inputs and suggesting what might belong in the field you're working on, given this structure's architectural logic. It doesn't know your story better than you do. It knows the architecture. You know your story. The combination is the value.

The AI never writes your prose. It never generates chapters. What it generates is structural input โ€” suggestions for your protagonist's wound, your midpoint reversal, your thematic statement. Raw material you shape, use, reject, or build on.

The AI is powered by Google Gemini and runs through GriotsWell's Python backend. It calls the platform's architecture-aware prompt system โ€” so suggestions are calibrated to the specific structure you're working in, not generic writing advice.

What You Walk Away With

Your output: a complete structural blueprint

Every major structural beat of your story, mapped and named. Your protagonist's arc from first to last scene. The turning points, the escalations, the resolution โ€” all of it in the right order for the architecture you chose.

This is not a finished manuscript. It is the plan you write from. Every scene you write will have a place in a structure you built intentionally, not discovered by accident somewhere in chapter 12.

What Happens Next

Take it into Scrivener

Your blueprint becomes your Scrivener corkboard. Each structural beat becomes a scene card. You write to the structure you built.

Take it into Word or Docs

Your blueprint becomes an outline document. You write from it chapter by chapter. The structure is already there โ€” you're filling it with prose.

Use it as a revision map

Already drafted? Run the tool against what you wrote. The blueprint shows you what your draft has and what it's missing structurally.

Compare with a World Wizard

Run the matching World Wizard to deepen your understanding of the cultural tradition behind your structure while you're building with it.

How Plotting Tools Differ From World Wizards

๐Ÿงฐ Plotting Tools
  • Cloud-based โ€” saves to account
  • AI-assisted at every field
  • Generates a complete blueprint
  • Focused on building your story
  • Works online, needs login
  • 17 structures across 9 architecture types
๐ŸŒ World Wizards
  • Standalone โ€” no backend required
  • No AI assist โ€” pure cultural teaching
  • Deeper cultural and historical context
  • Focused on teaching the tradition
  • Works offline
  • 30 structures across 10 world origins

Some structures have both a Plotting Tool and a World Wizard. That's intentional. The Wizard teaches you the architecture. The Tool helps you build with it. They're complementary, not duplicates.
