⚔️ The Hero's Journey
Joseph Campbell's Monomyth • The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949) • Departure, Initiation, Return
Origin: Joseph Campbell published The Hero with a Thousand Faces in 1949, gathering the patterns he found across the world's myths into a single "monomyth" — the Hero's Journey of departure, initiation and return. George Lucas built Star Wars (1977) on it deliberately, and Christopher Vogler shaped it for screenwriters in The Writer's Journey (1992), the ten-stage form this Story World follows.
It is the Classic Story World most writers already carry with them: a hero called out of an ordinary world, crossing into the unknown, tested by allies and enemies, brought through an ordeal that changes them, and returning with something of value for the people they left. It is built for a single protagonist whose inner change is mapped onto an outer road, and it gives every stage a job to do, which is why it holds so well across film, television and genre fiction.

World Story Plot Architecture, Linear, the one we know: Campbell drew the journey as a circle, but its movement is Linear: the hero passes through the stages in order, each caused by the one before, rising toward a single decisive ordeal and a return that completes the line. The person who comes home is not the person who left; that change is the point of arrival. Linear is one of the World Story Plot Architectures, and the Hero's Journey is one of its best-known shapes.
